Just a half-block off the beach, this small boutique hotel on the beach side of Ocean Avenue has a small, private footpath leading to the sand and surf of Santa Monica Beach. The pier is a block away, and many Los Angeles-area restaurants and shops are within walking distance.
Inspired by California’s breezy style, the pensione-style hotel doesn’t have a pool or a restaurant, but it does have lots of charm, rooms with hardwood floors, and a quiet Spanish-style courtyard. Surfboards hang on the outside of the building, which is two floors without an elevator, and décor in rooms and suites includes surfboard-shaped headboards and movie posters on the wall (all rooms are different).
Complimentary wireless Internet access is available in all units, and the front desk—which is open from early morning to early morning, but not 24 hours—has a computer at the front desk that guests can use as well. Guests enjoy discounted privileges at the pool, fitness room, sauna, and steam room of the Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel next door. Laundry facilities on site are complimentary.
Guests of Hotel California can park in a lot across the street for $15/day or in the lot for the adjacent Loews for the same price.

This Los Angeles-area hotel has 29 guestrooms and 6 suites in a charming two-story building with exterior corridors and no elevator. Décor varies from room to room but all is California-inspired, from the movie posters and guitars hanging on the walls to wooden headboards shaped like surfboards and surfboard-shaped rugs on the hardwood floors.
Rooms don’t have air conditioning, but all have ceiling fans. Full suites offer balconies and kitchenettes, junior suites have two bedrooms each, and California Courtyard rooms—like all the units—provide plush bedding and complimentary wireless Internet access.
Rooms face either the street or the hotel’s Spanish-style courtyard. Some rooms have VCRs, some have ceiling murals, and all offer cable TV, down comforters, and compact refrigerators.
